The Legendary Old Man’s Surf Spot on Oahu’s North Shore

Old Man’s, Oahu Webcams. Tucked away on Oahu’s famed North Shore lies one of Hawaii’s most storied and revered surf breaks – Old Man’s. This powerful wave has been challenging surfers for generations and remains an iconic part of the island’s rich surf culture.

The origins of the name “Old Man’s” are unclear, but many believe it refers to the large rock outcropping that sits near the peak of the wave, resembling a wizened face keeping watch over the lineup. Others say it was named after an elder Hawaiian man who could often be seen surfing the break in its early days.

What is certain is that Old Man’s was first ridden in the late 1940s, at the dawn of modern surfing on the North Shore. In those early years, only a handful of fearless wave riders like Greg Noll and Mike Stange dared to paddle out and take on the powerful peak. Their stories of huge, grinding barrels and bone-crunching wipeouts quickly spread through the small surf community.

As the 1960s dawned, the North Shore surf scene exploded in popularity, with young surf adventurers like Eddie Aikau, Buttons Kaluhiokalani, and Barry Kanaipuni testing their mettle at Old Man’s. Cameras started rolling to capture these pioneers charging some of the biggest waves ever ridden.

The break’s reputation for supreme challenge and serious consequences continued to grow through the ’70s and ’80s. Old Man’s became a rare ticket that only the most elite could punch – a wave where miscalculations could lead to hold-downs, injuries, or worse. Yet the allure proved irresistible to each new generation of chargers.

In modern times, Old Man’s remains an almost mythical proving ground. On its most ferocious days, with 20-30 foot faces detonating over a relatively shallow reef, only a select handful make the call to grab a shot at glory or infamy. Those who conquer its terror are forever etched into North Shore lore.

While not always a giant, Old Man’s can still put experienced surfers to the test on more moderate days. But one thing remains constant – the eerie feeling of being watched over by that craggy rock face, bearing witness to over 70 years of bravery, innovation, and respect for the ocean’s power.
